We have chosen to learn Spanish as our Modern Foreign Language here at St Edward's First.
All classes from Year 1 to Year 4 have weekly lessons covering how to have basic conversations in Spanish, and learning about the cultures and traditions in different Spanish-speaking countries.
At St Edward's First, we believe that learning a language is important as it helps our children to understand their place within a global society. Children can learn about the lives of other children around the world.
Our curriculum aims to foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to Spanish in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils. We intend to expose children to a different culture and language and encourage their curiosity in exploring it.
Some of the topics covered in Spanish are:
- Numbers
- Colours
- Introductions and greetings
- Our family
- Likes and dislikes
- Describing our appearance and personality
- Hobbies and interests
Each term we will learn about a different festival or holiday in a Spanish-speaking country – for example, in the autumn term we will learn about the Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Mexico!
All children will learn through our ‘Language Angels’ scheme (www.languageangels.com). Through the Language Angels scheme of work, we intend for children to develop a genuine interest and curiosity about foreign languages. Learning a second language offers pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others, and cultural differences.
All classes will have access to a high-quality foreign language curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupils’ skills in Spanish through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons which will be taught by class teachers.
Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their Spanish lessons continue to recycle, revise, and consolidate previously learned language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Each unit and lesson will have clearly defined objectives and aims, and incorporates interactive whiteboard materials to include ample speaking and listening tasks within the lesson. Lessons will include challenge sections and written activities.
Reading and writing activities will be offered in all units, with grammar concepts that will increase in complexity as pupils expand their language education.
Extending writing activities are provided to ensure that pupils are recalling previously learned language and, by reusing it, will be able to recall it and use it with greater ease and accuracy. These tasks will help to link units together and show that pupils are retaining and recalling the language taught with increased fluency and ease.
This Progression Map brings together the learning outcomes for each lesson, and mapping to the core skill areas and KS2 National Curriculum aims.
