Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching is the Church’s way of guiding people to live fairly, kindly, and responsibly in the world. It teaches that every person is made in the image of God and deserves dignity, respect, and care. It encourages us to help the poor, care for the environment, work for justice, and live in peace with others. Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that faith is not just about prayers but also about actions that make the world a better place for everyone.

At St Edward’s Catholic First School, we teach the children about the 7 key principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST): Dignity of the Human Person, Family and Community, Rights and Responsibilities, Stewardship, Options for the Poor and Vulnerable, The Dignity of Work, Solidarity and the Common Good. As Catholics, we believe that it is our role to help others in need and care for the world that has been created for us.

The 7 Principles of Catholic Social Teaching

Dignity of the Human Person - Every human person is created in the image and likeness of God.

Family and Community - The human person is not only sacred, but social.

Rights and Responsibilities - Every person has a fundamental right to life.  It is this right that makes all other rights possible.

Stewardship - The world God has created for us has been entrusted to everyone, and we are responsible and accountable to God as stewards of the earth.

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable - Society is judged on how it cares for the poor and vulnerable. We fundraise and help others who need it the most.

The Dignity of Work - Work is a way in which we can continue to participate in God’s creation.  Work gives dignity to life and must be carried out in such a way that the basic rights of workers are respected.

Solidarity and the Common Good - We are all People of God, one family.  Therefore, what happens to one has an impact on all, locally, nationally, and globally.  At the heart of solidarity is the pursuit of peace and justice.

As a school, we live out these key principles through daily lessons, our Gospel values, and helping others.
